Background: We use to order all of our food from Simon Delivers and they would leave it on our front stoop, so they pack the frozen stuff with dry ice. Well we had a 2-liter and some of the bricks of dry ice from the today's delivery so we decided to blow up some stuff.
We crammed the dry ice in to a 2 liter and filled it with hot water. We then ran to my roommates bedroom then tossed it off the balcony. It landed in the center of the back yard and didn't explode right away so we sat there for about 30 seconds waiting, then we heard the bottle expanding.
About this time the neighbors cat wandered in to the yard and curiously started walking toward the bottle. My roommates kept saying no, no kitty, no get away. I was laughing too hard I couldn't say wa word, when the cat was about a foot away from the bottle it exploded and one of my roommates at the same time that the bottle exploded screamed NO KITTY!!!.
The explosion was so loud that it sounded like a 12 gauge shotgun, the cat made off unhurt, maybe deaf but it was running fine. The bottle and the grass in the back yard were not so lucky.
The bottle landed in the middle of the neighbors yard almost 40 feet away and there is a 2 inch deep by 2.5 foot long by 8 inch wide crater in out yard.
We of course did this at dinner time in the neighborhood and the neighbor came out and asked us what we were doing. We explained that we made it out of a 2 liter, dry ice and some water but he did not seem amused. Yep it was his cat but we left that part out of the story.
The bottle on the left was the projectile, I found the cap on the far side of the other neighbors yard. The bottle on the right was our first test a week before this. It was VERY loud and left a little grass missing but nothing like the second bottle.
